So Thanksgiving is over….that means Christmas is just around the corner! Black Friday signaled the start of the Christmas shopping season and many people are ready to haul out the Christmas decorations and put up their trees, lights and other holiday décor. But be aware: some of those lovely Christmas time items can be hazardous to your dog’s health! Keep these tips in mind before you deck the halls:
1. Live Christmas trees and flowers such as poinsettias can be harmful if ingested by your dog. It is a good idea to opt for the artificial varieties, instead. Even when using artificial Christmas plants, make sure to avoid the use of cocoa mulch in the plant’s pot, as it may also harm your pet.
2. Christmas tree ornaments present another danger. While colorful wooden ornaments are beautiful, they can also contain lead paint, which can be toxic if swallowed. Many ornaments have hooks which can also injure your dog if he gets too close. Tinsel makes trees look great, but can cause major problems for your pet. The tinsel can attract your pet’s attention, but can damage the intestines if swallowed.
3. Make sure that all hanging decorations are secured and cannot fall and injure your dog. Dogs are often curious and might want to investigate any new decorations that you put out for the holidays. Just realize that anything you put up should be out of reach for your furry friend.
Christmas is an exciting time of year. Although Christmas trees and decorations are a part of the season, please remember the safety of your dog and make adjustments so that you can all have a safe and happy holiday!
